Ecover is an international company active in the production of ecological cleaners. They have been pioneers from the very start: marketing phosphate-free washing powder even before phosphates were identified as a problem. Their progressive environmental policy is an integral part of company operations. In the spirit of the ISO 14001 standard, they have extended their environmental policy to all departments of the company, from
ingredients to production and on through to marketing. Strict criteria are employed as guidelines for all business operations, from selecting raw materials, through production methods, to full decomposition of the end products.
The raw materials for Ecover products are based on vegetable and mineral resources, which have two major advantages: they are renewable, which means they can be grown again or replenished, and are inexhaustible. Also, they offer an unlimited range of possibilities.
By using renewable sources of materials, Ecover avoids creating both environmental and health burdens. By contrast, conventional detergents and cleansing agents use raw materials made from petroleum. Petroleum is a non-renewable resource that has just about been used up. The extraction, processing and use of this ingredient imposes an unacceptable burden on the environment.
Ecover uses only raw materials that are also fully degradable, with nothing left except minerals. That means all the ingredients are decomposed, not just the soaps, and decomposition occurs under oxygen-rich (aerobic) conditions as well as oxygen-poor (anaerobic) conditions.
Interesting Tidbits:
The most striking result of Ecover’s environmental policy is their ecological factory – the world's first! Built in October of 1992, it maintains a draw of more than a thousand visitors a year, even now. From the sedum roof (which doubles as a small ecosystem), to the recycled bricks, down to the end product, every step is taken to ensure the most ecologically sound methods for household cleaning are used. So much so, in fact, that in 1993 Ecover was awarded a place on the Global 500 Roll of Honour of the UN Environment Program for its environmental efforts with the factory.
