Although the animal it comes from, the Paihamu, was imported into NZ from Australia in the 1800s to establish a fur trade, its population exploded (exceeds 70 million) and native animals and plants now are threatened with extinction by this non-native pest. Currently, the NZ government uses a poison banned on US federal lands since 1972 to kill these animals. Many people think that it is inhumane as well as wasteful as the poisoned fur is not utilized in any industry.
